Blue Birds

Bluebirds are rare visitors to my feeders, but I was fortunate enough to see one this morning. Although we had quite a few blue jays all summer, they'd vanished like the red-bellied woodpeckers. It appears that one of them has returned, as well. Although their "song" is a bit harsh on the ears, very little is more lovely to the eyes.

Pretty. I saw something unusual in Detroit yesterday -- a male cardinal. Seems a little off course for late November?

Erik; I don't know...Even when I lived in Canada we had cardinals all year 'round...

Pink jays are fairly common and striking here - once saw one chase and snatch a blue tit. Found some slightly blurred shots of a yellow wagtail yesterday that visited our former garden...

If you put up a house in an open area for the bluebirds, they'll stick around, Lana. They're very sweet.

Julie; Cool.

Rob; This past year a bluebird almost took up residence in the sole birdhouse I have out back. This year I'm considering putting more up (although I feed raccoons & such, too, so I'm concerned about anything nesting too close, y'know?) There's a nature center w/in a mile of my house where there are dozens of bluebird houses, so that tends to be the main hangout for the local bluebirds. I'm still deciding what to do, at any rate. Regardless, yes, they are tremendously sweet!

That's a great picture of the bluebird. Yeah, I don't know what happened to the Jays. I hear them around more than I see them these days.

Charles; It's funny, as they & the red-bellied woodpeckers both took off around the same time, then they both suddenly reappear around the same time. Who knows...I'm just glad they're back. So beautiful (& they remind me of Toronto. *L*)

Good news on the bluebird. Keep up your efforts to have them nest in your yard - that would be a real treat!
Good for you sticking up for the much maligned Blue Jay!

Rob & Zen; I'm hesitant to encourage anything to nest in my yard, considering the nightly visits by a hoarde of raccoons & at least a couple of opossums (& at one point, foxes.) We're out in the woods, at any rate, so there are lots of places nearby they can nest that might prove safer.
