The Latest on Our Local Critters

I managed to get a picture of our local brown rat today. A handful of doves were eating in his vacinity, although they wouldn't get too close.
Lately I've been seeing more Carolina chickadees than the normal one or two. Sitting out on the deck with binoculars yesterday, I was able to verify that some of them are chicks. Still no sign of the cardinal, blue jay or woodpecker chicks, but I figure it's just a matter of time.
While watching the chickadees, however, I noticed our Carolina wrens going back & forth from our shed to the brush along the edge of our property. On closer inspection, it's clear that they're building another nest in there. Fortunately it's too hot these days for camping, so they're free to use our tent again, if they need it.
In other news, the plethora of blackberry bushes on & around our property are starting to ripen. Although I prefer to leave them for the critters, there are SO many this year I think we'll be able to claim some in the name of blackberry cobblers.

While I was working on my music project today, I happened to glance out the back window and saw some bunnies. They had hopped away by the time I got my camera though.

You just have one big nursery there with all your nests and chicks! Lucky you (except for the rat thing).

How great you are seeing all the birdies but did you say Rat? Guess I am lucky not to see them around here!

Shauna Roberts said...

That would be cool if you got another round of chicks! Ours are out of the nest and fat and fluffy, but still begging from their parents.

Travis; Cool on your bunnies! 'Tis the season. :)

Zen; I don't mind the rat, really. He certainly can't go through sunflower seeds like the squirrels can!

Mon@rch; Even rats have their place on this Earth, I guess. So long as it's into the birdseed, perhaps it'll stay away from bird eggs, y'know?

Shauna; According to the web, down here wrens will have multiple broods. I certainly didn't expect it so soon, though!

I kind of like the rat. He's not so different from any other mammal hanging around outside. I'd take him over a snake any day!

Lana Gramlich said...

Lisa; Considering we have both, we may suddenly stop seeing the rat someday. <:\ I'm with you, though. And I'd much rather have him in the yard than in the house!

I agree - rats can stay outside... :)

I had a baby bird that was trying to learn to fly in a windstorm come into the house once.

Go, Carolina wrens and chickadees!
Blackberry cobbler, mmmmmhhhhh.

Field rats are cool ;->

Lana Gramlich said...

Michelle; Oh! The poor baby bird!

Erik; I wouldn't be surprised if we don't have POUNDS of blackberries out back.
I'd never realized that rats are SO fast before. Makes sense, I guess...

I'm definitely picking some blackberries this week.

All of those animals are awesome, except the rat. Don't like them...lol....no, really.

I love blackberry cobbler, Lana. LOL@ Charles. Start picking if you want that cobbler! I'd be picking them too, Charles.

Blackberry is one of my favorite jams. And it's not too hard to can. Yum!

I'm gonna try to get a picture of these waterbirds tonight and send you one hoping you can help me identify them. No one I know can agree what they are. I've never seen them in my area until this year and now there are dozens.

Lana,

Nature sure is full of delights this time of year. :D I can see your busy birds in my mind and would have squeaked if I saw the rat. :D

Your blackberry cobbler sounds delicious. We have a few blackberry bushes too. I adore their color change in the autumn but I won't wish that on us. :D

Hugs, JJ

Mmm, blackberry cobbler....

Lana Gramlich said...

Charles; Get 'em before the critters do!

DH; Neither of us have ever actually MADE blackberry cobbler, so this may be an interesting experiment. *L*

Barrie; Due to the generosity of the patrons where I work, I already have more jam than we could possibly eat in 3 years. Besides, Charles wants blackberry cobbler, so we'll give it a go. *L*

Travis; I'm intrigued & look forward to the photos. I'll do my best to help!

Laughingwolf; I actually have a winemaking kit at home, so I may have to give that suggestion a try!

JJ; I would have squeaked if I saw the rat in the same vicinity, but since it's outside & a dozen feet away, it seems non-threatening. *L* Unfortunately we don't get a lot of color here in the Fall (although there's more on the northshore than the south.)

Steve; I have to say I've never had it, myself, but it sounds like something to try!

Hey lovely Lana,

Scary rat! But cute picture of the little guy. In Detroit, I mostly see really hostile squirrels, brown, gray, and black, all of them pissed off and giving people the finger with their teeny-tiny paws. (Kidding, but not much -- they are not afraid of anything including people which makes me like them even when they scare me on the way to work.)

Lana Gramlich said...

Michelle; DOWN WITH SQUIRRELS! I realized recently that calling them "rat bastards" (as I've been prone to,) is just a horrible insult to rats!

Natural said...

yuck on the rat. we have a hamster. that's it.

it would be cool to actually see a video of birds building a nest..they build them almost perfectly round...some of them do anyway, from the ones i've seen.

*Blackberry cobbler??*

I'll be turning up at your doorstep soon! 0_0

Lana,

Given your squirrel hatred, I have to tell you this funny thing -- Bernard Goetz (subway vigilante in NYC in the 80s) actually owns a squirrel farm because he loves them so much. If that isn't the weirdest shit I have ever heard . . . I'm afraid of the little dudes because they're so fricking mean here. I swear to God they jump on you if they can. Wicked!

laughingwolf said...

lemme know how it works out, lana

michelle, i'm with you... the only good squirrel is the one in the pot, if one is into such....

Lana Gramlich said...

NW; At some point soon we're goin to get some spray shellac, so we can preserve the old nests & bring them inside (my den is "rustic" themed, to say the least.)

Virginia; Feel free!

Michelle; I remember Goetz...but no friend of squirrels is a friend of mine! DOWN WITH GOETZ, TOO!

Laughingwolf; Will do (IF I can find my winemaking kit, that is! *L*)

My indoor/outdoor cat Oliver recently dragged a rat slightly bigger than that into my yard. He seems to leave birds alone happily.

Lana Gramlich said...

Sidney; We have to chase some of the neighbors' cats away from time to time.

Shauna Roberts said...

Don't worry about the blackberry cobbler.Cobbler is very easy to make. If you've made biscuits, you have down all the experience you need.

Lana Gramlich said...

Shauna; Being a Northerner, I've never made biscuits, either. Anything more complicated than "Snakin' Cake" may be a challenge. We'll see what happens!
