I was delighted today to learn that a pencil sketch I'd submitted last year for the cover of Charles' new, poetry chapbook, "Wanting the Mouth of a Lover," was accepted & published.In bird news, I've been struggling to identify a chick that's been hopping around our yard lately. Although it acted like a brown thrasher, that clearly wasn't what it was. Unfortunately I haven't been able to get a picture of it yet, but at least I was able to positively ID it today as a juvenile Eastern towhee.
This morning, I spotted this juvenile red-headed woodpecker out back. He followed the juvenile red-bellied woodpecker around like they were brothers (much to the seeming chagrin of the latter.)

I remember the first time I had a published story with an illustration. I wondered whether it would reflect the story ... and of course I wasn't disappointed. Your sketch makes me think of horror haiku in a good way. Congrats.

I'm also a birdwatcher. We have western towhees here. We also have pileated woodpeckers, hairy woodpeckers, and downy woodpeckers eating the suet from my birdfeeder.
What's up with the Red-bellied Woodpecker? Does it feel superior to the Red-headed Woodpecker or is it just jealous?
marvin; Thanks you! I'd tried doing some sketches to illustrate one of his previous books, but it just wasn't working out. Things are flowing better for me these days, artistically, so perhaps I'll have to give it another shot for his next book.
We're loving the avian nursery--particularly as this year's hatchlings are even more prolific than last year's!
jr; Thank you! I had a couple of ideas for the cover, but I thought the simplicity of this design was expressive enough without being overpowering.
timethief; Thank you. :) We've had other woodpeckers, too (almost all of them,) but I haven't been able to get pictures yet. The red-bellied are the most prolific throughout our area. The pileated woodpeckers are surprisingly shy, considering their size. A while back I saw a hawk attacking one across the street (it got away.)
larry; I was actually pretty surprised at the red-bellied woodpecker, considering that he's tended to be too trusting for his own (ultimate) good. When all the other birds take off in a huge wave at some sign of danger, he doesn't even bat an eye. His own dad dive-bombed him one day in an effort to make him go & he didn't even flinch. Perhaps the red-headed woodpecker is just putting him in his place. *L*

Be sure and mention your illustration credit on your resume. After all, in a world where MFAs may paint like brain-damaged donkeys, the folk who organize shows and things like any little bit of reassurance they can get!
