Audubon Insectarium & Contest Result

Charles & I successfully went to the Audubon Insectarium in New Orleans today. Here are a few pictures.

A spotted gar.

A historical plaque (click to read.)

Seagull and brown pelican (along the Causeway bridge on our way home.)

I didn't win the "Fall Colors" art contest, but thanks to everyone for the support! The winner was a copy of a work by Melendez.

What a cool place! Better luck next time, don't sweat it...you have many many more to win! You're just at the beginning!

Totally fascinating, cool shots.

The gar -- I was fishing in Florida once and some crazy dude hauled one into the boat. Big jaw and quite a lot of sharp razor teeth, almost as creepy as the gators swimming off shore.

Thanks to everyone for the comments. The insectarium was very cool! I'll keep plugging away at the contests.

A happy New Year to you and Charles! :o)

Aren't gars mesmerizing! And yet the minute you get them out of the water - their odor is hard to take! They are like little leftover prehistoric reminders.

That is the most creative display of dead bugs i've ever seen. Very cool.

Lana: I especially like the very first picture-but all are great. How did you ever manage to get the seagull and brown pelican "in sink?" Very nice! D

Travis said...

I'm not a fan of bugs, as you know. But those pictures were interesting.

I really like that bug design pictures. Every bug is just right in size, shape, and placement.

Lana,

My lad would love to find his way to the insectarium. More importantly, so would I. I was only a fan of ladybirds and earwigs as a town lad, but despite living in a metropolis the Japanese obsession with beetles also spills over into an obsession with 'mushi' (insects).

Happy New Year - like the poem your besotted lover man wrote!

I thought you should have won, too!

I always enjoy your posts. Thanks for sharing such beautiful photography.

These are great photos, Lana! Were they shot through glass?

As for the contest, you can't win 'em all. It's the trying that counts!

Many good entries are overlooked cuz they HAVE to pick just one, and the judging is so subjective.

We all liked YOUR photo! :)

AWESOME!!

One of the upcoming books in my middle-grade series will use an insectarium as the setting.
I may have to tap into your first-hand knowledge...

:-)

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

"Charles & I successfully went to the Audubon Insectarium in New Orleans today."

I have to ask-Have you and Charles had unsuccessful trips to insectariums in the past?

Shauna Roberts said...

Great job on the pictures, especially getting the butterflies so well. I'm really looking forward to going to the Insectarium next time I'm in New Orleans.

I've very much enjoyed your posts and photos and art over the past year. Your picture of a blue heron now hangs in our breakfast room with some of our other Louisiana art. Thank you, and have a wonderful 2009.

Happy New Year, Lana! Loved the photos, and am sort of surprised no one got creeped out by the idea of an insectarium.

All the photos are wonderful - as usual - but that first one - WOW!

Happy New Year! All the best of health and happiness to you and your family... :-)

Hi Lana,

The skiers did have a laugh, as did I. But the resort is teeling with wildlife when the snow disappears, so we might go there in the summer ^ lots of beetles there, but no beetle within a beetle - I wouldn't mind one of those myself! Good informative plaque too;)

Someday I'm gonna get a piroque, me.

I'm sorry you didn't win the contest.
These photos are absolutely stunning!! I love the butterflies ~ so beautiful!

I'm sorry for my absence, too. I've been on vacation, and haven't been on the computer hardly at all. I haven't been taking photos either, unfortunately. Today I hope is the day, though! :-)

Thanks to everyone for the kind words & continued support. I apologize for having dropped off of the blogosphere recently.

Shauna; Glad you're enjoying the heron. :)

Larry; Yes, actually. That's how we ended up with free passes to go this time around. Read all about it.

Naval Langa; Thanks kindly for your very thoughtful cards.

NW; Okay. Keep me posted. (Be warned--packing/shipping for larger items is likely to run about $50. That's why I tend to paint small-ish.)

Chris Eldin; Tap away! :)

Lynda; Only the beetle & the gar were through glass. Most of my other shots through glass didn't come out well, unfortunately.

JR; Yes--the beetle made of beetles was very cool!

Donnetta; A lot of birds take advantage of updrafts along the Causeway bridge, so they get themselves in synch like that.
