Award Thanks & an Afternoon Hike (Updated)

First, thanks to Holly for this beautiful award. I'm glad to have made her acquaintance through the blogosphere & I'm sure you'd enjoy her blog as much as I do.

We had such beautiful weather today Charles & I decided to go to Fontainebleau State Park for a hike. First we went to see the new bald eagle nest (the first in the park since Hurricane Katrina.) The parents weren't around, but a helpful employee (with a scope set up on a tripod,) pointed out one of the chicks. From there we headed to the lake. It was pretty windy along the shore, but not enough to deter us from going out on the boardwalk. There were many birds around, to our delight. Beyond the range of my cameras was a large group of white ibises.

Louisiana's state bird, the brown pelican.

Some kind of heron (in the foreground of the lower right hand corner of the picture--click for larger view.)

A great white egret.

One of dozens of American coots.

We were treated to another breathtaking sunset.

(Update, Feb. 13, 2009; This photo was featured on the front page of the St. Tammany News.)

The city of New Orleans, across the lake (where preparations for Mardi Gras are well underway.)

One last shot on our way out; tonight's nearly full moon.

Hi Lana-

Woots?! That comment above is somewhat comical. Great shots- Amazing how spring type conditions come so early to the south. Although we're pretty warm now, the snow is melting and it will be a while before we see a lot of wading bird action, etc. I really like the sequence of the post. Sun goes down, moon rises!

Fantastic photographs! Wow!

There are a pair of eagles near where my folks live. I got a chance to see them in flight last year.

And there were a couple of eagles flying near my office last month.

Skippy; Thanks. Gotta love sunsets & moonscapes--the best things in life ARE free! :)

Tom; I think Spring comes early here because (in MY book, anyway,) it never actually leaves. *L* Glad you liked the photos.

Travis E.; Don't apologize, silly! It's completely understandable, all things considered!

Charles; I was glad there were so many water birds (& that even the screaming children didn't turn them away.) We totally scored, in that regard. Lots of good laughs, too, of course. ;)

Miladysa; You're too kind, as always.

Travis; Cool on the eagles near your office! We typically have to drive a ways to see eagles, but they're always worth the trip, anyway. Such big, beautiful birds!

Rob; I was wayyyyyy out on the pier for that shot, with a MAJOR zoom lens on. You could even see Metairie that day, actually.

NW; Thank you kindly. I appreciate the input! :)

Monarch; It was another great hike, all around. But then again, when are hikes NOT great, really? Oh, wait...when there's sn*w. ;)

Dave; Thank you! Yes, it was a great afternoon.

Hey beautiful,

These are fantastic as usual! Particularly love the moon one. I don't know what it is, but I'm one of those types who has good luck on the full moon instead of the usual craziness.
