New Painting

Sunrise at the Falls
24"x12" acrylic on gallery-wrapped canvas

Inspired by a photo of Niagara Falls taken at dawn on Mar. 24, 2002. Unseen in the digitized image is the effect of glossy varnish on the highlights in the water, which reflect light from whatever source is near.

This is beautiful, Lana. It's deceptive because on the surface it's simple, but really you give us a lot to look at. The colors especially. If I saw them separately, I wouldn't think they would work together. But what you've done is make them stunning.

Wow Lana! That is beautiful. I love the amount of color you have used in such a seemingly dark painting. Nicely done!

Lovely, Lana- You've made it so strangely serene, considering the thousands and thousands of pounds of water rushing! :)

This is a stunning painting and like Jenn has said I was taken by the fact that you have rendered that noisy crashing wall of moving water appear to be serene. You are gifted and I thank you for sharing your gift with use readers.

Chris Eldin, Abe Arceo, Jamie, Scott, Steve, G, Lisa; Thank you!

Jenn Thorson; Thanks. Niagara Falls can actually be surprisingly peaceful at sunrise on a Spring morning, before the crowds turn the whole area into a chaotic jumble of noise & photography.

TT; Thanks kindly. I'm glad you like it. :)

Tabib; Thanks! Certain areas of the Niagara Gorge are reknowned gulling areas, so I wanted to incorporate that into the scene. Besides, I wanted to give it some life & some depth in the lower section.

holly; Thank you! I love the Falls, too. I lived about 20 minutes from it for almost 20 years, so I was there almost constantly (at least during "off" hours, when the crowds were absent.) For a while I even worked for the power company there, so I had access to areas of the Falls that tourists could only dream of.

K Fields; Thanks much! That's the mist of the Falls, though...not a tree.

Michelle (artscapes); Thank you. So many times my friends & I stood there, imagining being among the 1st people to see it. Climbing down to the base of the gorge downriver & looking up also makes a person feel quite small & insignificant, in the large scheme of things.

A painter and photographer, you are one creative soul. You managed to make the falls look so real.

Love the colors and the smokey purple on the right side of the picture. very dramatic.

Hey lovely Lana,

This is stunning! It so reminds me of my one trip there. You really captured the essence. Now if you could paint one where I push my trip companion (an ex-boyfriend) down the falls, it would totally reflect my emotional state at the time. :)

Michelle's Spell; Thanks! Your ex is already over the edge with mine, that's why all is well & peaceful. ;)

Charles; No, YOU. :)
