A Hike at Northlake

Although still not 100%, we're both feeling much better. Having had enough of the house lately, we went for a hike at Northlake Nature Center (in Mandeville, LA.)

There were dozens of turtles of different types (mostly red-eared sliders.)
Some were covered (to varying degrees,) in some kind of moss.

This soft-shelled turtle was HUGE, dwarfing even the largest of the hard-shelled turtles.

Our state wildflower (Louisiana iris/blue flag) was out in force.

There were various insects, as well.

Little wood satyr butterfly.

Southern pearly-eye.

Some kind of eel-like mystery fish.

Spotted gar.

We saw an alligator, too, but it was too distant to photograph.

Glad to hear you are feeling better, we still wouldn't get any damselflies here, tis too early! But lovely to see both those and you butterflies, neither of which are the same here. Oh and we get no turtles either...
Take care XX

Thank you for the great virtual walk. Wonderful turtle shots. Do you take a book with you, to identify all the species you see, or do you just know a lot through your experiences out in nature?

I'm glad to hear you are well enough to go out into the sunshine!

G; Glad you enjoyed. :)

NicoleB; Thanks for coming along!

Chrissy; Sometimes we even get box turtles ambling across our backyard. Seems like our hot swamps are turtle heaven, really.

Charles; I enjoyed both of those things, but being with YOU made it all the better. :)

Lynda; I often intend to bring field guides, but 99 times out of 100 I forget them, so what I identify I've either had previous knowledge of or I ID later (from photos) at home, or sometimes with the aid of other bloggers,, etc.
And yes, it's WONDERFUL to get out of the house again! :)

Michelle (artscapes); It's AWESOME to get out again, particularly now that the weather's good!

Michelle; Thanks. We're hoping to go on another swamp tour this weekend. That'll be fun!

It's A Yoga Thang; I'm glad you popped by & enjoyed your visit. :)

V; Yeah, the eel almost came right up to the shore! It was in the middle of a bubbling mass of minnows or something. I love the turtles, too, & there were SO many that day!
