Fontainebleau & Good News

Since our weather was fantastic, Charles & I did a lot of hiking this weekend. Saturday afternoon we went to Fontainebleau State Park in Mandeville, Louisiana.

One of many Eastern pondhawk dragonflies.

The base of this huge, uprooted tree has been transformed into a beehive.

One of a few blue crabs.

There was at least this one pair of common grackles.

One of hundreds of colorful minnows.

A pileated woodpecker.

One of the nature trails.

We also heard the local great horned owl & visited the bald eagle nest (although there's no activity there yet to see.) There was a handful of common moorhens, some red-headed woodpeckers, a common crow, a great egret and dozens of red-winged blackbirds.

In other news, I found out today that my golden orb weaver photo is a finalist in the Julia Margaret Cameron Award contest. As such, it will be featured in the Wonderpick Gallery and goes on to the finals.

Very interesting. You sure have a good eye for ALL the aspects of nature. My problem is I get too focused on one thing at a time.Birding, trouting, whatever. Oh well...

Beauteous. I want to walk into the vista below . . . Never seen a pileated woodpecker; the dragonfly reminds me of Jimi Hendrix . . . which is strange, eh?

...and a Pileated Woodpecker. My life's ambition.

When all I see out of my windows all day are other houses; an odd, raggedy squirrel; and telephone wires, it's nice to be reminded of unmolested open space and the creatures who dwell in it. Looking at your work is like a big exhalation of pent-up breath.

Beautiful photos Lana. It looks like you had a great weekend! My favorite is the Pileated Woodpecker. (Being in Louisiana, are you sure it's not a Ivory Billed Woodpecker ;-)...just kidding.

Congrats on being in the finals of the award contest!

The Woodpecker is a favorite for me too but I like the look of that trail into the woods.

Charles; Thanks, honeydumplins! :)

troutbirder; Thanks! Believe me, sometimes I can get quite fixated, too!

Travis Cody; Thank you. :)

Erik; Thanks. The pileated woodpecker's HUGE, almost the size of a crow. The Jimi Hendrix/dragonfly thing IS kind of interesting...

Abe; It helps to live in the pine woods. ;)

Avery; What a kind comment! Thanks, hon. I'm glad you enjoy your visits. :)

Anonymous, MaineBirder & NatureFootstep; Thank you.

V; Sorry about your weather, hon. If it's any consolation, it's almost too hot to go out much anymore here. <:\

Larry; Thanks. :) I could probably digitally edit it into an ivory-billed. ;) *L*

mick; Thank you. I find paths in the woods far too inviting to ignore. My husband & I have hiked too long, sometimes, unable to resist the call to see what's around the next bend. *L*

Congratualtions on the Orb weaver, Lana!

Am always delighted to recognize birds and insects that I know in your photographs, for to me Florida is an exotic place. I have a piliated that comes around some times and attacks a half-dead white pine in my hard.
Of course, I love that photo of the path.
