Bogue Chitto NWR and More

A few weeks back, Charles and I got up at dawn to go to Bogue Chitto Nat'l Wildlife Refuge (at Lock 1.) Most of the refuge is only accessible via boat, which we don't have. Unfortunately the very short nature trail seemed primarily used as a kid's hangout & fishermen's bathroom, which was sad to see (and smell!) Needless to say, we didn't stay long.

Lock 1

A view from the trail.

Trumpet vine flowers & remnants.

Nymph of a Carolina grasshopper. Thanks to David Ferguson for the ID!

On our way out, a flock of black vultures were perched in the trees along the road.

On the way home we stopped by the Abita Creek Flatwoods Preserve, where we spotted this large, red-tailed hawk.

Unfortunately, by then it was so humid I couldn't keep my lens from fogging up.

In other news, I was recently interviewed about Abita Artists, the local art group I founded in 2008 & still run. The resulting article was published in Sunday's newspaper.

In yet other news, on Monday I saw a renowned ENT specialist about my dizziness and vertigo problems (again.) All of my tests came back normal (again.) However, the repeated "vestibular neuronitis" diagnosis I've been given for 15 years has been replaced by possible "diet-induced vestibular migraine." I have a long list of foods & drinks to avoid for this month, a calcium channel blocker prescription to take daily and a book to read. Considering my symptoms, history and test results, the doctor strongly believes it could be nothing else. Considering everything I've learned in the past 2 days, I strongly believe he's right. If I feel better by the end of the month, the problem is not only solved, but reversible, as well. Finally!

I'm really glad you have a doctor that is giving you more options. Foods to avoid...very interesting! Who would have guessed?
That trumpet vine should be a future painting!!! Awesome pic!

Gorgeous pictures, can't ever stress that enough. Love the Red-tailed Hawk, in spite of the fog... He's a big one for sure! Majestic, scanning his territory for dinner.

Hope you feel better by the end of the month.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed that this diagnosis is the one that sticks. Sounds promising! Thanks again for the hike - your blog always reminds me that I need to get out and see nature more often.

Love the black vulture. So similar, but still very different from the turkey vultures (that's all we have around here).

that Black Vulture looks very relaxed Lana. Keep taking the bird medicine too, it certainly hepls to make me feel better.

Lana, nice hike and photos. But I am so sorry to see that these nice places have to be ruined by people who just don't care. I hope this diagnosis works for you. I have vertigo and dizziness come and go too. I never did really find out what causes it.

Sad that the trail is 'trashed' up and so short.
It looks like this would be a beautiful place to explore.
Can't you rent a canoe somewhere?
Lens fogged up, I feel your pain!

Best of Luck for solving your health problems!

I wear glasses so I don´t like humid weather either. I get mist on the glasses ans see nothing. Looks like a good place to hike,

Christine; The thing that floors me is that I've had food-related migraine issues in the past (back then it resulted in ocular migraine, however.) All things considered, you'd think SOMEwhat might have given that a second thought! At least I have something to go on now, though. At least it's "only" been 15 years, rather than "forever."
Glad you like the trumpet vine. They're very lovely, but many locals consider them a "pesky weed." Silly humans!

Cloudia; Thanks. :) Yes, finally.

eric1313;
Thanks, hon. Truth be told, I feel better ALREADY & it hasn't even been a week yet!

Neil; Thank you. :)

Laurie Powers; Thanks. It feels promising, too. Hope you're finding time to get out more!

Slugyard; Yes. To be honest, I still prefer turkey vultures (they soar more without flapping as much--so beautiful to watch in flight!) Fortunately we have those down here, too.

Phil; I was somewhat surprised at how calm the vultures were, considering how close we got to them. I think they didn't feel threatened because we were in the car. I hope bird medicine makes EVERYONE feel better. :)

Charles; So far so good, babydumplins. ;)

eileeninmd; Thanks, hon. Yeah, we were pretty disgusted at the treatment of the area. I wonder if the administrators of the area know about it.

NicoleB; Yeah, it's a shame that people can't respect nature. I don't know where there's any kind of canoe rental around here, to be honest. I'll have to look into it, when I get a chance.

NatureFootstep; It would be a nice place, if it were treated with respect. *sigh* As for the weather, it comes with the territory where I live (down in the swamps of Southern Louisiana.) Fortunately it's usually too hot to get out in the summer, so I avoid a lot of fogging.

Beautiful pictures!!!

I'm going for Vestibular therapy now for a balance problem that no doctor could figure out. It's helping a little. Some days are better, some are back to square one.
I know what you say about migraines and food. I've got a list that trigger my migraines too!
Feel better.

Aimless Writer; Thank you. So are you having vestibular migraines, or headache migraines? Regardless, I hope you feel better ASAP.

Michelle (artscapes); I'm happy to report that it appears that it is! HOOray!
