New Park; Camp Salmen

A couple of weekends ago another new park opened in our area; Camp Salmen Nature Park, a converted boy scout camp in Slidell, LA.

Great blue heron.

Cloudless sulphur on big, red, mystery flower.

I loved the way the trees crossed over the path. Isn't it inviting?

Buckeye on blue mistflower.

This stretch of boardwalk felt like walking through Jurassic Park.

Milkweed assassin bug on mystery yellow flower. Thanks to Ken Wolgemuth of for the ID!

Roseate skimmer. I've seen green dragonflies here. Brown, white, blue & orange, sure, but NEVER pink/purple! Thanks to Ron M of for the ID!

Long-tailed skipper on blue mistflower. Thanks to Vernon Antoine Brou for the ID!

Eastern lubber grasshopper, a monster of a bug. I'd thought I heard a Carolina anole (lizard) walking nearby & turned to see this. Thanks to Ken Wolgemuth of for the ID!

Monarch butterfly on blue mistflower. Note; If you're in this climate and you want the butterflies to come, plant blue mistflower!

Evidently there are lots of trails here (over 5 miles worth,) but we were only able to find & enjoy about 1/4 mile. Most trails don't seem to have any markings. I'm hoping whoever administers the park isn't finished--that they plan on marking trails and perhaps making the only, posted map a bit more intuitive. It's a large site--it would've been nice to be able to find some of the other trails.

That heron is gorgeous! And you got some really nice butterfly shots too. You're lucky to have so much beautiful nature nearby. I always enjoy looking at your photos. :)

I love the way that moss hangs off the tree.

Great shots- looks like a great place to hike with the camera.

That looks to be such a beautiful place and I especially liked the photo of the Great Blue Heron under all the trees.

Nice buckeye pic! Glad to hear the new parks openning by you, wonderful place!

The heron photo made me think of "Lord of the Ring" movies. You have a dragonfly with a color I never seen before. ;)

First, you ought to be appointed Head Librarion of the North American continent. Just my personal opinion after your dazzling display of research on my blog. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

Second, have you ever done a painting having a ghost in it? Or more than one? I'd be interested in buying one if you have. Southern ghosts are the most interesting and I could use a cover for my new ghost book.

Halcyon; Yes, I think we're totally blessed with natural beauty here. Wherever you are, though, it's never really far away! Thanks for your kind comments. :)

Travis E.; During the heat of summer it almost looks like the trees are melting.

Mike B.; Thanks. The little garden area was a great place to catch the butterflies!

mick; Thanks. It was a really nice place. We're lucky that parks are opening here--in many places they're closing. <:(

Charles; You ain't kiddin'!

Christine; Yes--we're quite fortunate! Thank you. :)

NatureFootstep; I was delighted to see the dragonfly, myself! Evidently they're common around here, but that was my 1st sighting in 7 years!

Rick; Thanks, hon--you're quite welcome, of course! Blame it partly on my Libra Sun. I'm a stickler for fairness & as far as I'm concerned that loser ought to have his kneecaps busted. Did you get the e-mail I sent today?
I did a painting of a haunted figure once (called "Inner Child,") but I don't know that it'd suit your needs. I'd be glad to fwd it for your consideration, though. I have another idea, as well. E-mail me.

Great shots of the heron and all the insects Lana. It looks like a place I could wander around for the entire day! My favorite photo is the path with the overhanging tree and moss. Beautiful.

A very atmospheric shot of the Great Blue Lana, glad you left the habitat in shot. That Roseate Skimmer looks pretty smart too. Good work.

I love all of these shots. Some very beautiful butterflies and the heron is fabulous :D

That's a shame that you couldn't find more marked trails. Maybe you could write a letter?

And I like the Roseate Skimmer too, that's also a great shot. Incredible eye you have.

Cloudia, Phil, Chrissy & Punam; Thank you!

Dyeve; Thanks. :) We're very lucky--we're surrounded by various, wonderful parks.

Larry; Thanks, hon. I'm always a sucker for paths under mossy trees, myself.

Travis C.; After more research, it seems they're still working on things. We'll have to go back once more is ready.

eric1313; Thanks, hon. I appreciate it, but I think it's 10% "eye" and 90% beautiful surroundings and critters. ;)

Larry; The grasshopper was HUGE. I mean, you could HEAR it walking, it was so sizeable! I'm definitely looking forward to spending more time here in the future.

Don't you just love these State Parks. New or old they're always in the most beautiful places. :)

Lana Gramlich said...

troutbirder; This one's not a state park, but a local one. Regardless, ALL parks are good parks! :)
