A Few Birds

A few birds seen in our yard recently...

Male Eastern towhee, a large member of the sparrow family. Unfortunately his back is turned to us here, so his lovely, burnt-orange sides are barely noticeable.

A male downy woodpecker, North America's smallest, seen here once every year & a half or so (so I'm glad I got a few pictures this time.)

The first handful of Wintering American goldfinches arrived in the past couple of weeks.

Happy Thanksgiving to my American readers!

i love the woodpecker shot! the distinct color it has on its head n feathers are simply beautiful. is that rack purposely hung there to attract the birds?

You got some good shots there of your birds. Looks like you have plenty of place nearby for them to feed and rest.

that woodpecker looks gorgeous. It looks a bit like our large oen, but has more stripes.

levian; Thanks. Yes, the photo was taken in our feeder area.

Kelly; We've been feeding the birds for years now & have plenty of cover for them to hide in, if need be, so we get LOTS of them. We half-jokingly refer to our place as the "Cardinal Emporium," since there's usually 15 or more here at any given time.

NatureFootstep; Thanks. We get all kinds of woodpeckers here (living in a pine forest,) but we don't often see the downy, so I was glad to get a decent shot of it.

I saw some goldfinches in my yard the other day too. Unfortunately my bird cam wasn't on. And they haven't been spotted since. :(

I had a hairy woodpecker once at my feeder. Usually we just get the red-headed variety. You can see him here.

Glad that you are feeling better. :)

So cool to see the Downy.

Halcyon; Bummer! We'll be inundated by goldfinches soon. They & dozens of chipping sparrows call my backyard their Winter home. We get red-headed woodpeckers here, too--usually in the Spring/Summer. Red-bellied are here year round. Unfortunately I'm not really feeling better yet, but I appreciate the well wishes!

Punam; Thanks. :)

Charles; Yes, always nice to see the uncommon birds, too. :)
