Road Trip, Day 3 (Pt. 2); Carlsbad, NM

As promised, here are some of the animals at Living Desert Zoo and Gardens State Park. First off; birds. Unless otherwise noted, they are all rescues.

Our national symbol, the bald eagle (explored on flickr.)

One of the more social birds, a Harris' hawk.

Common raven, shown here preening.

Turkey vulture, common to most of the U.S. Despite having a face only a mother could love, I can watch their graceful soaring all day.

Seen throughout the U.S., a Cooper's hawk.

One of the most common owls in North America, the great horned owl.

Perhaps one of the cutest in it's family, the burrowing owl.

Not an attraction of the park but rather flying nearby, a Mississippi kite.

Next up; land-based animals.

In unrelated art news, I will be artist of the month for June at Bayou Barber in Covington, LA (starting June 4th,) and my Sun through Live Oaks photo rec'd an Honorable Mention in the 2nd Edition of the Julia Margaret Cameron Award, hosted by the Worldwide Photography Gala Awards.

Wonderful photos, Lana! The birds are all gorgeous and what a cool sighting of the Kite.

Indeed, and the best thing is that I saw them with you.

Fantastic photos, Lana! You are so right about the turkey vulture's face!

Hope you have posted landscapes from your trip?

We had a 3 week road trip too, so I've been for the most part, absent from the blogosphere for the last month or so.

great portraits of the birds.

I don't know why, but I think vultures are cool looking.

That is cool that you are able to get such close shots of them.

We have many turkey vultures that fly around the farm and they are so graceful. I like them -- they are nature's cleanup patrol. :)

thx lana, always loved raptors!

Lana Gramlich said...

eileeninmd; Thanks! We saw quite a few Mississippi kites, actually.

Charles; Likewise, sweetie pie. :)

Lynda; Thanks! More landscapes are coming. The posts here follow our trip, so all of those places we visited (Carlsbad Caverns, the Grand Canyon, etc.,) WILL be here eventually. ;) Glad you had some time to get away, as well. Will you be posting photos from your trip, too?

NatureFootstep; Thanks, hon!

Rico Swaff; Personally I think vultures are highly underrated, but they're not for everyone, I guess.

Nancy; I hear that! We have both turkey and black vultures in our area. I have to admit that I prefer the turkey vultures (to watch.) Black vultures flap a lot more.

laughingwolf; Me, too! Thanks. :)

Your photography is stunning as always Lana! The owl photos are my favorite. They are such intriguing animals! Thank you so much for the comment on my blog about lending an ear. I really appreciate it!

Lana Gramlich said...

Heather; Thanks, hon. I love owls, myself (all raptors, really.) Anytime on the ear, hon. I mean it. *hug*

You have some very rare, for me, photos of birds that never get to my backyard. I have high hopes of an eagle on my board fence but it ain't (as they say) likely.

Great pictures. I loved the one of the burrowing owl. My grandaughter and I found a nest right under a road yesterday. Hopefully when the babys emerge they will stay clear of the cars.

Lana Gramlich said...

*Honest Abe; Similarly many of these will never be in my backyard, either, which was why I included stops like Living Desert Zoo and Gardens State Park and Bosque del Apache NWR on our road trip. ;)

Bill S.; Thank you. Yes, I hope those babies steer clear of the road, for sure!

Travis E.; You all should really take a trip to Carlsbad Caverns (photos of that yet to come.) It's just fantastic!

Travis C. & Cloudia; Thanks. :)

Jay.me; We had a great time. We really needed the vacation and it was nice to get out of the swamps for a change!

It looks like an amazing trip, Lana,

The bald eagle and the turkey vulture are two of my favorite photos in this set. Great captures. And I agree that watching the turkey vultures float so effortlessly on the currents of air really remind you of how graceful these creatures can be.

Lana Gramlich said...

debra; It definitely was...and we haven't even gotten to the really GOOD stuff yet! ;)

PhotoDiction; Thank you. :) I liked the way the bald eagle came out, as well. As for the vulture, it's amazing how beautiful such an "ugly" creature can be, y'know?

*Honest Abe said...

Your comment "...sub-tropical swamps..." cracked me up.

I love the pictures of the Bald eagle and Harris hawk. They're so freaking clear and full of color. all the rest were great, too. I know I'm behind on commenting here but, wow, you've been busy.

Lana Gramlich said...

*Honest Abe; It's lovely, but sometimes you've GOT to get away, y'know?

Kelly; Thanks--I love the eagle, too. Yes, we were quite busy on the road trip. A fair amount of go-go-go and very little rest, but it was a good time!
